Open Adventure was set up by James Thurlow in 2004 to build a series of ‘serious but enjoyable’ adventure races in the North of England, and runs a programme of highly-successful races throughout the year.
There are three main race formats. The Open5 series is five events featuring mountain biking and running over 5 hours, from January through to November. The Open12 bridges a gap between the Open5 races and the challenging Open24 race, building in many of the ‘fun bits’ - abseiling, canyoning, white water paddling etc – over a 12-hour event. The Open24 is a non-stop 24-hour adventure race featuring mountain biking, running and paddling with navigation a key skill - each of the stages includes a special stage or 'trouser filler'.
For the really keen there’s the Endurance Series consisting of competition in an Open5 event, the Open12 and Open24.
